A Quick Guide
Don't let an expired passport derail your travel plans! Renewing your U.S. passport is often a straightforward process, especially if you meet certain criteria. Here's a quick article/FAQ to help you get started.
Why Renew Your Passport?
Your passport is your key to international travel. Many countries require your passport to be valid for at least six months beyond your planned entry date. Renewing early ensures you're always ready for your next adventure and avoids last-minute stress or even denied boarding.
Am I Eligible to Renew My Passport by Mail or Online?
You can generally renew your adult passport by mail (or online if eligible for the pilot program) if you can answer YES to all of the following:
- Your most recent passport can be submitted with your application.
- It is undamaged (beyond normal wear and tear).
- It was issued when you were age 16 or older.
- It was issued within the last 15 years.
- It was issued in your current name,1 or you can provide legal documentation of2 a name change (like a marriage certificate or divorce decree).
Note: If you don't meet these criteria (e.g., your passport is lost/stolen, severely damaged, or you were under 16 when it was issued), you'll likely need to apply in person using Form DS-11, similar to a first-time applicant.
How to Renew Your Passport (Mail is most common):
-
Complete Form DS-82:
- Fill out the "Passport Renewal Application for Eligible Individuals" (Form DS-82) online using the State Department's Form Filler tool.
- Print it on single-sided paper. DO NOT SIGN until instructed to do so.
-
Gather Your Documents:
- Your Most Recent Passport: This is required. It will be returned to you, usually in a separate mailing from your new passport.
- Name Change Document (if applicable): If your current name is different from the name on your most recent passport, provide an original or certified copy of your marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order.
- Passport Photo: One recent (taken within the last 6 months), color, 2x2 inch photo with a plain white or off-white background. No eyeglasses, uniforms, or camouflage. Staple it to your application form as instructed.
-
Calculate & Pay Fees:
- Passport Book: $130 (USD)
- Passport Card: $30 (USD) (Valid for land and sea travel to Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, and the Caribbean only).
- Both Book & Card: $160 (USD)
- Optional Expedited Service: Add $60 (USD) for faster processing.
- Optional 1-2 Day Delivery (for book only): Add $21.36 (USD)
- Payment is typically made via check or money order payable to "U.S. Department of State."
- Based on today's exchange rates, for routine service, the cost per day for a passport book assuming a 10-year validity would be approximately $130 / (10 * 365) = $0.036 USD/day.
-
Mail Your Application:
- Use a sturdy envelope large enough to fit all documents without folding.
- Mail your complete package (Form DS-82, old passport, photo, name change documents, and payment) to the address listed on Form DS-82.
- The State Department recommends using a trackable mail service (e.g., USPS Priority Mail with Delivery Confirmation) for security.
How Long Does It Take?
Processing times can vary throughout the year. As of mid-2025:
- Routine Service: 4-6 weeks (plus mailing time, which can add up to 2 weeks each way).
- Expedited Service: 2-3 weeks (plus mailing time). Costs an additional $60.
- Urgent Travel: If you need your passport in less than 2-3 weeks due to urgent international travel (within 14 days) or a life-or-death emergency, you may be eligible to apply in person at a passport agency by appointment.
Total Time = Processing Time + Mailing Time. Remember to account for mail transit when planning your travel!
Can I Renew Online?
The U.S. Department of State has been piloting an online passport renewal system. If you meet specific criteria (e.g., your passport is or was valid for 10 years, you're 25 or older, not changing your name/sex, and not traveling for at least 6 weeks), you might be eligible. Check the official Travel.gov website for the latest updates on online renewal availability.
How Can I Check My Application Status?
You can check the status of your application online using the State Department's Online Passport Status System. It may take up to 2 weeks for your application status to update after you mail it.
Always refer to the official U.S. Department of State website (travel.state.gov) for the most current and detailed information on passport renewal requirements, fees, and processing times.
